Quilmes, Administrative center in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
Quilmes is an administrative city in Buenos Aires Province that stretches along the Río de la Plata coast into the southern suburbs of the capital. Railroad lines divide the urban area into several zones, structuring residential neighborhoods and commercial areas along their tracks.
A settlement of people from northwestern areas of what would become Argentina was established here in the mid-17th century, after these groups were displaced by the Spanish. The granting of city status came in the early 20th century, when industrialization and the railroad accelerated growth.
The brewery located here lends its name national recognition, as the beer produced in this area is known throughout Argentina. The river shapes daily life for residents, who use it both as a place to relax and as a boundary between different neighborhoods.
Visitors should note that the area near the river can become difficult to access during heavy rain, while the higher ground to the west remains more stable. Public transport connects the different parts of the city, with train stations serving as central hubs.
A museum devoted to transportation displays the development of mobility in Argentina and collects vehicles from different decades. Some streets still carry names that recall the earlier inhabitants from the northwest of the country.
