Café de los Angelitos, Historic café in Balvanera, Argentina
Café de los Angelitos is a historic establishment in Balvanera featuring dark wooden panels, stained glass windows, and marble floors that capture the early 20th century aesthetic. The interior displays around 350 photographs across its walls, chronicling decades of the venue's history.
The establishment was founded in 1890 by Italian immigrant Batista Fazio and gained prominence when tango legend Carlos Gardel signed his first record contract there in 1917. This connection to early tango history became defining for the venue's place in the neighborhood's past.
The venue showcases tango performances nightly with professional dancers and musicians, keeping alive the deep link between this neighborhood and the dance form. You can witness how the tradition remains woven into the area's social fabric today.
The venue is located at Rivadavia Avenue 2100 and operates daily from 8:30 AM to midnight, with tango performances beginning at 8:30 PM. Note that shows do not run on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly.
After closing in 1993, neighbors organized weekly tango dances on the sidewalk until the building underwent complete reconstruction and reopened in 1999. This grassroots effort by the community reveals how deeply the venue mattered to people in the area.
