Palacio Dassen, Historical mansion in Monserrat, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Palacio Dassen is a historic mansion in Monserrat completed in 1914, distinguished by a prominent tower structure. The building is notably narrow but extends deep into the lot, and features an astronomical observatory at the top accessible by interior stairs.
The building was completed in 1914 by architects Alejandro Christophersen and Claro Cornelio Dassen, initially serving as both a residence and automobile showroom. It later became headquarters for the Argentine Actors Association and received national historic monument status in 1999.
The interior features detailed oak carvings with scientific and masonic symbols that reflect the owner's passion for mathematics and teaching. These decorations tell the story of his intellectual pursuits and connection to the academic world of his era.
The site is best visited as part of exploring historic Monserrat, where this palace stands among other early 20th-century buildings. Note that the building now houses the Argentine Actors Association, so visiting may require prior arrangement or happen during specific times.
A central glass brick skylight creatively illuminates the first-floor entrance hall. This rare architectural solution brings natural light to what would otherwise be a dark interior space within the narrow building.
