Escuela Normal Superior en Lenguas Vivas Sofía Esther Broquen de Spangenberg, International language education center in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Escuela Normal Superior en Lenguas Vivas Sofía Esther Broquen de Spangenberg is a public school in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires that covers primary, secondary, and teacher training levels. The school focuses on modern foreign language instruction, offering programs in English, French, German, Portuguese, and other languages.
The school opened in 1957 under the name Instituto Nacional Normal Superior en Lenguas Vivas John F. Kennedy, originally admitting only female students. It later became coeducational and was renamed to honor Sofía Esther Broquen de Spangenberg, an educator who shaped language teaching in Argentina.
Walking past the building during school hours, you can hear students practicing French, English, German, and other languages in the corridors. This daily multilingual sound gives the place a character unlike most schools in the city.
The building sits on Juncal street in Recoleta, a neighborhood that is easy to reach on foot from many central points in Buenos Aires. Since it is an active school, access inside is restricted during the day, but the exterior can be seen freely from the street.
Since 1988 the school has held International Baccalaureate accreditation, which means students can graduate with a diploma recognized in universities around the world. This makes it one of the very few public schools in Argentina to hold that status.
