Catedral Ortodoxa Rusa de la Resurreccion

Catedral Ortodoxa Rusa de la Resurreccion, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Cathedral of the Resurrection is an Eastern Orthodox church building located in San Telmo with five prominent blue onion domes topped by golden stars and Orthodox crosses. The interior follows Byzantine design principles, with a richly decorated iconostasis serving as the focal point of the worship space.

Construction began in 1898 with funding provided by Tsar Alexander III, and the building was completed by 1901 as the first Orthodox church established in South America. This made it a significant milestone for Orthodox Christianity on the continent.

The cathedral serves as a spiritual center for the Russian Orthodox community in Buenos Aires, where worshippers gather to maintain their Byzantine liturgical traditions and religious practices. Visitors can witness how this place preserves a connection to Orthodox faith and cultural heritage among families far from their ancestral homeland.

Access to the interior is through the left-side entrance of the building's facade, which opens directly into the main worship area. Visitors should plan their visit during appropriate times and dress respectfully, as this remains an active place of worship.

The iconostasis displays three decorative doors, with the central holy door reserved exclusively for clergy use during services and adorned with hand-painted Ukrainian majolica tiles. This traditional craftsmanship adds a distinctive artistic layer to the sacred space.
