Buenos Aires Historic Tramway

Buenos Aires Historic Tramway, Transport museum in Caballito district, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Buenos Aires Historic Tramway is a transport museum in Caballito that displays restored trams and operates a 2-kilometer route through neighborhood streets. The vehicles span different decades and show how public transport evolved in the city.

The first streetcar began operating in Buenos Aires in 1862 and shaped how residents moved through the city for more than a century. The museum was established in 1980 to revive this important transport form after regular service ended in 1963.

The trams carry names of significant places and historical figures from Buenos Aires that visitors learn about through conversations with operators. These names reflect how public transport shaped the city's identity and daily life over generations.

Rides last about 25 minutes with trams departing every 30 minutes from Emilio Mitre street where the visitor center is located. Arriving early on weekends and holidays is best since seating is limited and fills quickly.

Volunteers from the Federico Lacroze Association operate the trams and often provide free rides to visitors on weekends. This volunteer effort shows how the community keeps an important piece of city history alive.
