Edificio Nicolás Repetto, Residential high-rise in Caballito, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Edificio Nicolás Repetto is a 24-story residential tower in Caballito with three distinct sections: a central tower and two lateral wings. The entire structure was designed to combine modern living with community services all within the building.
The building was constructed between 1948 and 1954 as part of the El Hogar Obrero cooperative's project to provide housing for workers. It represented a turning point in social housing initiatives in Buenos Aires and introduced new ideas about working-class communities.
The building housed an early self-service store and offered residents services including a kindergarten, tailoring shop, and pharmacy within its walls. These facilities reflected the goal of creating a complete community for working families.
The building is centrally located on Avenida Rivadavia with convenient access to public transportation and nearby shops and services. Eight elevators efficiently move residents and visitors through the building's various levels.
The building earned the nickname 'White Elephant' for its imposing size, but also because of pioneering heating and cooling systems that were rare in 1950s Argentina. These technical features made it a notable example of modern residential architecture for its era.
