Plaza Primera Junta, Public square in Caballito, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Plaza Primera Junta is a triangular square in Caballito that connects major transportation hubs, including a Line A subway station, multiple bus routes, and the Sarmiento railway station. Its shape and central location make it an important landmark for navigation in the neighborhood.
The square was inaugurated on May 25, 1908, commemorating the date of the 1810 governing junta. A 6.5-meter statue of Miguel de Azcuénaga, a member of that first government assembly, was installed in 1910 and has defined the space ever since.
A permanent book fair has operated here since 1976, with dedicated vendor stalls set up by the municipality in 1984 to showcase local literature. The space has become a gathering point where readers and book lovers meet regularly.
The space was thoroughly renovated in 2006, with new paving, improved lighting, and extra seating areas that make it a comfortable place to spend time. Its excellent connections to public transit make it easy to reach and navigate.
Two high-relief sculptures on the flagpole depict La Porteña locomotive and La Pulpería tavern, representing aspects of local transportation and social history. These artistic details tell the story of everyday life and economic activity in the area during earlier times.
