La Plata Botanical garden, Botanical garden in La Plata, Argentina.
La Plata Botanical Garden is a seven-hectare space with approximately 6,000 plant species, including native Argentine trees and specialized geographical collections. The gardens are divided into different themed sections that display various plant habitats and groups.
Carlos Luigi Spegazzini founded the botanical garden in 1898 as a center for plant research. The facility developed into an important institution for plant conservation and study.
The garden brings together Roman, French, and Oriental design styles visible throughout its different sections. Visitors can also find sculptures and an English-style house used for art exhibitions.
The garden is open Tuesday through Friday and requires comfortable shoes due to the large area and some unpaved paths. Free guided tours in Spanish are offered on weekends and help visitors understand the different collections.
Five greenhouses stand within the garden, including an art nouveau structure that won recognition at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition. This historic construction still demonstrates the craftsmanship and botanical expertise of that era.
