Montevideo Department

The department occupies 201 square kilometers along the Rio de la Plata, forming the smallest yet most populated administrative region of Uruguay.

The department establishment occurred on January 27, 1816, when Jose Artigas signed the decree creating the first administrative divisions of the Provincia Oriental.

The department contains multiple municipalities divided into 62 neighborhoods, each maintaining individual traditions through local markets, festivals, and community gatherings.

The Intendencia Departamental manages executive functions while the Junta Departamental handles legislative duties, operating from central offices in Montevideo city.

With 3,200 inhabitants per square kilometer, the department maintains the highest population density in Uruguay, surpassing all other administrative regions by a substantial margin.
