Plaza de la Diversidad Sexual, LGBT memorial square in Ciudad Vieja, Uruguay
Plaza de la Diversidad Sexual is a square in Ciudad Vieja with a triangular granite monolith at its center. The structure was designed as a permanent recognition and symbol of solidarity with the LGBT community.
Eight activist groups proposed the creation of this square in 2005 and received unanimous support from the Montevideo legislature. The site emerged from years of advocacy work by organizations pushing for official recognition of the LGBT community.
The inscription on the monument promotes respect for all genders, identities, and sexual orientations in both Spanish and English. Visitors from different backgrounds can read the message in their own language as they walk through the space.
The square is located in the old town and easy to reach on foot from central streets. It serves as a gathering location for pride celebrations and community events throughout the year, making these times particularly good for visiting.
The triangular shape of the monolith references the pink triangles used to mark LGBT individuals during historical persecution. This design choice creates a thoughtful connection to that painful past without needing to explain it directly.
