Cinemateca Uruguaya, Film archive and cultural center in Centro, Montevideo, Uruguay.
Cinemateca Uruguaya is a film archive and cultural center operating four theaters across Montevideo, each equipped with modern digital projection. The venues combined provide approximately 400 seats and present premieres and director-driven films throughout the year.
The institution was founded in 1952 through the merging of two film societies and grew to become Latin America's largest film archive by the 1970s. It has continuously served as a repository for cinematic works and cultural memory since its creation.
The cinema screens works by filmmakers from South America and beyond, showing stories that rarely appear in commercial theaters. The programming choices reflect how the country views cinema as an art form and a means to share perspectives that might otherwise go unheard.
The cinemas are located at the corner of Bartolomé Mitre and Reconquista in the city center, established in this location since 2018. The venue is accessible by public transport and the theaters themselves are designed to welcome all visitors.
During Uruguay's military regime from 1973 to 1985, the cinema became a gathering place where people met despite restrictions on public assembly. Film screenings became a way for society to preserve and express its freedom.
