Teatro El Galpón, Independent theater in central Montevideo, Uruguay.
Teatro El Galpón is an independent theater in central Montevideo, Uruguay, housed in a building that contains three performance halls, exhibition spaces, a cafe, and a school for performing arts. The different spaces sit together under one roof, making it a place where performances, training, and everyday social life all happen side by side.
The company was founded in 1949 when two independent groups joined forces under César Campodónico and Atahualpa del Cioppo. During the 1970s, the political situation in Uruguay forced the entire company into exile in Mexico, where it continued working for nine years before returning home.
El Galpón is one of the few places in Montevideo where independent theater companies can develop long-term projects without commercial pressure. The building also houses a puppetry company, which gives the space a playful and open character that attracts audiences of all ages.
The theater sits in the center of Montevideo and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city. It is worth checking the current program in advance, as the schedule changes with the season and includes both evening shows and daytime workshops.
Despite being based in the city center, the theater's training department regularly takes productions out to neighborhoods across Montevideo and other parts of Uruguay, bringing shows directly to children and young people where they live. This outreach work is considered a core part of what the theater does, not a side activity.
