Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a Catholic church in downtown Córdoba featuring three naves arranged in a cross shape. The interior displays rectangular columns flanking the side aisles, while the main nave rises under a barrel vault decorated with colorful patterns.
The site originated as the Mercedarian Monastery of San Laurentius, approved in 1601. Its current facade was completed in 1869 by Italian architects Bettoli and Kanepa.
The basilica has served as the spiritual center of Córdoba's Catholic community for centuries. Visitors can observe the steady flow of worshippers attending Mass and prayers, reflecting the continuing importance of this place in local religious life.
The church sits near the Jesuit Block and various museums, making it convenient to visit alongside other downtown attractions. Its central location makes it easily walkable and provides good navigation through this historic district.
The interior houses a baroque pulpit from 1776 considered the second most elaborate in Argentina. Only the pulpit in Jujuy Cathedral surpasses it in detail and craftsmanship.
