Tapejara, Prehistoric flying reptile from Santana Formation, Brazil

The Tapejara measured 1.3 meters in wingspan and displayed a prominent semicircular crest extending over its snout and back of its head.

Scientists discovered the first Tapejara fossil in 1989, dating from the Early Cretaceous period between 112 and 109 million years ago in South America.

The name derives from Tupi language, representing connections between paleontological discoveries and indigenous Brazilian linguistic heritage.

Paleontologists examine the scleral rings of Tapejara specimens to determine its daily activity patterns and feeding behaviors during different times.

Research indicates that Tapejara belonged to a specific group called Tapejaridae, with physical features distinguishing it from other flying reptiles.
