The Cordillera del Ybytyruzú is a mountain range that stretches across two eastern departments of Paraguay with varying elevations throughout. The range is cut by several streams and features diverse vegetation zones, from dense forests at lower elevations to more open areas at higher points.
The range provided shelter for plant species and early inhabitants during the last glacial period, acting as a refuge when surrounding areas were colder and drier. Over the centuries, various groups settled in and around the mountains, leaving traces of their presence through settlements and artifacts.
The name comes from the Guaraní language, meaning "ridge of the mountain," reflecting the indigenous heritage of the area. Local communities use specific trails and locations throughout the range for traditional practices and everyday life.
Access to the mountains is best through Colonia Independencia, a settlement with accommodation options nearby. The dry season offers the best conditions for exploring, as trails become easier to navigate and visibility improves.
A waterfall called Salto Suizo drops about 50 meters and hides within the dense forest in a remote corner of the range. Few visitors reach it because the path winds through thick native forest away from main routes.
