Miño Volcano, mountain in Chile
Miño Volcano is a dormant stratovolcano located high in the Andes of Chile, reaching an elevation of over 5,600 meters (18,400 feet). Its symmetrical cone shape is formed from layers of ancient lava and ash that have solidified into dark rock surfaces with distinct mineral coloring.
The volcano formed more than three million years ago during the ancient volcanic processes that shaped the Andes. No historical eruptions have been recorded, and it remains dormant today while geologists continue to study the region.
Preparation is important because of the high altitude and harsh desert conditions, including thin air and extreme temperature changes throughout the day. Bring plenty of water, strong sun protection, and warm wind-resistant clothing when planning a visit to this remote location.
Lava flows from the summit remain visible as dark lines streaking down the mountain's slopes today. These solidified streams allow visitors to directly observe the paths that molten rock took millions of years ago.
