Avenida Mariscal López, Major avenue in Asunción, Paraguay

Avenida Mariscal López is a major thoroughfare that extends from central Asunción toward San Lorenzo, lined with commercial businesses, educational facilities, and contemporary buildings. The avenue serves as a connecting passage between different areas of the city for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The avenue was named Coronel Bogado by ordinance No. 1679 of 8 May 1826, honouring Colonel José Félix Bogado. Ordinance No. 484 of 16 August 1915 renamed it Avenida Colombia, and municipal decree No. 512 of 5 April 1941 gave it the name Mariscal López, after Paraguay's second president, Francisco Solano López. Since January 1982 it has extended as far as San Lorenzo.

The avenue's name honours Marshal Francisco Solano López, Paraguay's second president, under a 1941 municipal decree; before that it was called Avenida Colombia (1915) and Coronel Bogado (1826). Along its route stand the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Central Railway Station and the Recoleta church and cemetery, landmarks that mark the city's religious and civic life.

The avenue has numerous hotels and accommodations nearby for visitors of all budgets, ranging from affordable to upscale options. It is easy to explore the route on foot, and there are various options for navigating between different sections using public transportation.

The avenue has changed names three times: Coronel Bogado by ordinance of 8 May 1826, Avenida Colombia by ordinance of 16 August 1915, and Avenida Mariscal López by municipal decree 512 of 5 April 1941. Since January 1982 it has continued beyond Madame Lynch to San Lorenzo, where it becomes Avenida Dr. Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia.
