Colônia crater, Impact crater in Parelheiros district, São Paulo, Brazil
The circular depression spans 3.6 kilometers in diameter and features a ring of hills rising 125 meters above the inner basin.
The crater formed between 1 and 20 million years ago when a meteorite approximately 200 meters wide struck crystalline basement rocks.
The protected natural landmark contains sections of Atlantic rainforest and serves as an outdoor laboratory for geological research and education.
Located 35 kilometers from São Paulo's center, the crater houses the Vargem Grande neighborhood with a population of 35,000 residents.
The crater's sediment layers contain a detailed climate record spanning 130,000 years, with potential data reaching back 2.5 million years.
