Mercado Municipal de Santo Amaro, Market hall in Santo Amaro District, São Paulo, Brazil
Mercado Municipal de Santo Amaro is a market hall housed in a historic building with a central dome and lateral wings that extend across multiple levels. Inside, butcher stalls, fishmonger counters, and produce vendors share the space with restaurants, cafes, and wine bars that serve food and drinks.
The building was constructed in 1897 as a central trading point in São Paulo and preserved the last standing 19th-century architecture in this district. After a fire in 2017, the hall underwent extensive restoration before reopening in December 2022.
The market takes its name from the Santo Amaro neighborhood and serves today as a living gathering place where locals meet to shop and eat together. People use the restaurants and wine bars as natural meeting spots, mixing commerce with daily social interaction.
The market is easily accessible on foot and centrally located in the Santo Amaro neighborhood with good public transport connections. Visitors should come in the morning or early afternoon when fresh produce selection is best and crowds are lighter.
After the 2017 fire, the market was not simply rebuilt but expanded to roughly four times its original size to accommodate more commerce and dining. This expansion transformed it into one of the larger market halls in São Paulo.
