Estádio do Morumbi, Football stadium in Morumbi district, São Paulo, Brazil.
Estádio do Morumbi is a football arena in the Morumbi district of São Paulo with room for more than 66,000 spectators and a natural grass pitch. The facility spreads across several tiers with covered stands and seating blocks that surround the playing field on all sides.
The arena opened in early October 1960 when São Paulo FC faced Sporting Lisbon and won with a single goal. Over the following decades the stadium underwent several expansions and modernizations to improve spectator areas and facilities.
São Paulo FC has made this ground its home since opening day and the stands fill regularly with supporters wearing the club colors of red, white and black. On match days the area around the stadium comes alive with food vendors and chants that echo through the streets well before kickoff.
Several bus routes run from central São Paulo and other neighborhoods to the grounds since no metro station sits nearby. On match days it helps to arrive with extra time to avoid crowds at the entrance gates.
In October 1977 more than 138,000 spectators gathered for a match between Corinthians and Ponte Preta, a record that still stands today. Such numbers were possible in an era before strict safety regulations when people stood closer together.
