Figueira das Lágrimas, Historic tree in São Paulo, Brazil
The Figueira das Lágrimas stands between Avenida Dom Pedro I and Praça do Monumento, measuring between 10 and 12 meters in height at Estrada das Lágrimas 505.
During the Paraguay War in 1864, mothers gathered at this fig tree to bid farewell to their sons departing for battle, giving the tree its name.
Law students from Faculdade de Direito do Largo São Francisco maintain a tradition of gathering under this tree for graduation farewells since the early 1800s.
The tree site includes benches, lighting systems, and informative bronze plaques, making it accessible for visitors throughout the day at Praça Figueira das Lágrimas.
In 1909, local residents organized protests to protect the tree when urbanization plans threatened to cut its branches, leading to its preservation.
