Our Lady of the Conception Cathedral, Guarulhos, Catholic cathedral in central Guarulhos, Brazil
Our Lady of the Conception Cathedral is a church building in the center of Guarulhos, a city near São Paulo, recognizable by its two tall towers that rise above the surrounding buildings. Inside, a classic nave runs through the space, flanked by side chapels and walls covered in decorative tiles.
The site goes back to a Jesuit chapel built in 1560, one of the oldest religious foundations in the region. The original rammed earth structure was later replaced by the current stone building after the site was raised to parish status in 1695.
The interior walls are covered with tiles depicting scenes from the life of Jesus, made by local artists. Walking through the nave, visitors can follow this sequence of images along the walls from one end to the other.
The cathedral sits in downtown Guarulhos and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets and nearby squares. Visiting outside of Mass times gives you more room to look around the interior at your own pace.
Two former bishops, Dom Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini and Dom Joaquim Justino Carreira, are buried inside the cathedral walls. Their tombs are not always clearly marked, so asking a church attendant for directions is a good idea.
