Galeria do Rock, shopping center
Galeria do Rock is a shopping center in downtown São Paulo housing more than 450 stores within an architecturally eclectic building. The shops offer clothing, musical instruments, skateboard gear, piercing and tattoo services, along with music-related products and accessories for fans of rock and urban culture.
The building was constructed in 1963 originally as Shopping Center Grandes Galerias. During the 1970s, record stores began to open here in large numbers, earning it the name Galeria do Rock and establishing it as a hub for music enthusiasts.
The gallery serves as a meeting place for people passionate about music, fashion, and street art. It reflects the values and interests of São Paulo's youth culture through the shops and activities that fill its corridors.
The gallery is located on Rua Vinte e Quatro de Maio in downtown São Paulo and is easily accessible by public transportation or car. Parking is available nearby, and most shops are open Monday through Saturday from around 10 in the morning until 6 or later in the evening.
The name Galeria do Rock was not given officially but emerged organically in the 1970s when record stores began opening there in such numbers that locals naturally called it by this name. This grassroots naming reflects how the space naturally became a symbol of music culture in the city.
