Escola Estadual Amadeu Amaral occupies a three-storey building on Largo São José do Belém, facing the Paróquia São José do Belém. The carioca architect Hypolito Gustavo Pujol Júnior adapted plans by Manuel Sabater for the Brás and Santos schools, giving it 20 classrooms, high ceilings, tall vertical windows, large doors, staircases and balconies, with corridors added to ease circulation.

Created in 1907 as Escolas Reunidas do Belenzinho in a rented building on Avenida da Intendência, the school had 129 pupils by 1908 under professor Carlos de Escobar. In 1909 it became Grupo Escolar do Belenzinho, and in 1911 it moved to its current building on Largo São José do Belém. Renamed Grupo Escolar Amadeu Amaral in 1932, it became Escola Estadual Amadeu Amaral in 1999. CONDEPHAAT listed the building on 11 November 2010.

The school received recognition as a heritage site through both CONDEPHAAT and Conpresp classifications, reflecting its educational influence in São Paulo.
