Museu da Maré, Community museum in Maré favela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Museu da Maré occupies a former maritime factory building of about 800 square meters, divided into twelve thematic sections. The spaces document the life, history, and development of this large community.
The museum was founded in 2006 and grew from initiatives by the Centro de Estudos e Ações Solidárias da Maré. Support from cultural institutions helped transform the former factory into a public space.
The permanent exhibition shows daily traditions, celebrations, and spiritual beliefs through objects donated by residents. You see how people here live together and mark important moments as a community.
Weekdays are the best time to visit when the rooms are less crowded and you can explore the exhibitions at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes since you will walk between different sections.
The collection includes digital, cartographic, and photographic materials that show how this densely populated community has changed over time. These documents come from residents and offer an authentic view of local history.
