Praça da Liberdade, Square in Savassi district, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Praça da Liberdade is a public square in the Savassi district of Belo Horizonte with gardens, fountains and marble sculptures. The grounds stretch across several blocks and are surrounded by four major avenues that connect the square to different parts of the city.
The square was created between 1895 and 1897 during the foundation of Belo Horizonte as part of the original city plan. A comprehensive redesign in 1920 introduced French-inspired landscaping with new fountains and formal gardens.
Locals use the square as a meeting point and the palm-lined paths connect it to nearby cultural institutions on foot. The fountains and shaded benches create a calm spot for conversation and rest in the middle of the city.
The square sits at the intersection of four major avenues and can be reached on foot from several directions. Walking paths run through gardens and shaded areas with benches that invite visitors to rest or watch daily life.
The first traffic light pole installed in Belo Horizonte in 1929 still stands at its original corner of the square. The device continues to function and is considered a technical monument of urban traffic history.
