The Mechanical Engineering Department has occupied renovated and expanded sheds on the campus since the 1980s, followed by Electrical Engineering in the 1990s.

The IEPHA "Good Class" designation is a heritage classification of the building, not a teaching certificate. The school's original home on Avenida Santos Dumont, where classes began on 8 April 1912, now houses the UFMG Cultural Centre; the engineering school moved to Rua Espírito Santo in 1989.
