Inhotim, Botanical garden and sculpture center in Brumadinho, Brazil
Inhotim is a botanical garden and sculpture center in Brumadinho, Brazil, covering roughly 345 acres (140 hectares) of land. The site connects paths between exhibition pavilions, forest sections and open lawns where sculptures stand directly in the landscape.
A mining entrepreneur opened the institute in 2006 to show his private art collection on former mining land. The site grew over the following years into a public space where visitors can view works from around the world.
The gardens house 4300 Brazilian plant species and 500 artworks from national and international creators, forming Brazil's largest open-air contemporary art museum.
The institute sits roughly 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Belo Horizonte and opens Wednesday through Sunday. Visitors planning to explore the full site should bring comfortable shoes, as paths between galleries can cover several miles.
One of the galleries has no walls and consists only of a roof that filters rain and sun while the work beneath remains visible. The Equatorial Greenhouse holds rare plants including the Carrion flower, which bloomed here for the first time in 2010.
