Igarapé, Municipality in Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Igarapé is a municipality in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, located in Minas Gerais state. The town has a compact urban center surrounded by rural areas and low hills.
Indigenous groups of the Macro-Jê language family lived here until Portuguese bandeirantes arrived in the 17th century searching for enslaved people and gemstones. This encounter marked a major shift in the region's development.
The name Igarapé comes from the Tupi language and means 'canoe path', a reference to how people once traveled along the waterways here.
The town sits about 50 kilometers west of Belo Horizonte and is reachable by regular bus service from the capital. The best time to visit is during the drier months from May to September.
Pedra Grande rises about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) from the Serra de Itatiaia and offers panoramic views across the entire metropolitan region. From this natural vantage point, visitors can see the surrounding landscape stretch far toward the horizon on clear days.
