Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a baroque church in downtown Cabo Frio with a simple front facade, one entrance door, and three upper-level windows for light. A bell tower rises on the left side of the structure.

Construction of the present building started in 1663 when the city center moved from the Passagem district to its current location. This relocation of the urban core led to the establishment of this religious center in the new area.

The name reflects the veneration of Mary in the community, visible in the carved main altar by Portuguese artist Manoel Bessa. A wooden statue of the Virgin from the early 17th century shows how Portuguese religious traditions shaped this place.

Inside sits a rare baptismal font made from Lioz stone, a Portuguese material from the 17th century. This piece is one of just a few remaining examples of its kind in Brazil, showing a direct link to colonial heritage.
