Comboios Biological Reserve, Biological reserve in Linhares and Aracruz, Brazil
Comboios Biological Reserve is a protected area spanning roughly 785 hectares of Atlantic Forest along the coast of Espírito Santo state. It combines forest and coastal zones with stretches of semi-desert beach where marine animals come to nest.
The reserve was established in 1984 to protect the forests and nesting grounds along the coast. Its creation responded to growing threats to marine life from human activities in the region.
The site serves as a hub for Projeto TAMAR, a major sea turtle conservation effort that engages visitors with the importance of marine life protection. Local communities participate actively in monitoring and educational programs that highlight their connection to the coastal ecosystem.
Access requires advance permission and reaching it involves traveling rough dirt roads or longer routes by main highway. Visitors should expect limited services and minimal infrastructure in the area.
This site hosts the only known concentration of leatherback sea turtle nesting in Brazil, where these animals come to lay eggs. Protection efforts focus on monitoring specific beach sections to improve survival rates for this endangered species.
