Third Bridge, Bridge in Vila Velha, Brazil
The Darcy Castello de Mendonca Bridge stretches 3.3 kilometers across Vitoria Bay, connecting the cities of Vila Velha and Vitoria with its 61 pillars.
Construction of the bridge started in 1978 under Governor Elcio Alvares and finished in 1989 during Max Mauro's administration, marking a new era for regional development.
Known locally as Third Bridge, it received this name as it followed two previous structures: Florentino Avidos Bridge from 1928 and Prince Bridge from 1979.
The bridge handles approximately 58,000 vehicles daily through its toll plaza with 15 lanes, while maintaining emergency medical services and mechanical assistance.
With a central span reaching 70 meters in height and 260 meters between pillars, the structure allows large vessels to pass underneath into Vitoria Bay.
