The protected area spans 460,352 hectares across three municipalities, bordered by the Mutum River to the north and Araguari River to the west.
The Brazilian government established this conservation area through presidential decree 97.630 on April 10, 1989, to promote sustainable forest resource management.
Indigenous communities near the forest maintain traditional practices of river fishing and sustainable resource harvesting, adapting to the forest's natural cycles.
Access to the forest requires boat transportation along the Araguari River from Porto Grande municipality, with local guides available for navigation.
The forest contains substantial populations of valuable tree species, including Dinizia excelsa, Manilkara huberi, and the economically important açaí palm.
