This court was established in 1947 as a key institution for managing public finances in the state of Goiás. Since then, it has grown into the central authority responsible for overseeing how all state money is handled and spent.

The court's sessions are open to the public, and the Ministério Público Especial, through the Procuradoria Geral de Contas, takes part in every judgment session and speaks on all matters submitted to the court's decision. The name Tribunal de Contas means court of accounts, and its seven councillors hold lifetime mandates, retiring compulsorily at 75.

The court sits at 640 Avenida Ubirajara Berocan Leite in the Setor Jaó, where it moved in 2016 after decades on the old Praça Cívica. Its seven councillors are backed by a technical staff of about 700.
