Central South, Administrative mesoregion in Bahia, Brazil
Central South is an administrative mesoregion in Bahia that encompasses eight municipalities with varied landscapes, including mountains, valleys, and agricultural lands. The eight principal cities are Boquira, Brumado, Guanambi, Itapetinga, Jequié, Livramento do Brumado, Seabra, and Vitória da Conquista.
This region developed as an agricultural center during the colonial period, with extensive plantations of coffee, beans, and corn supporting Bahia's growth. Farming remained key to economic development and shaped the settlement and structure of the municipalities.
Local traditions blend Portuguese influences with indigenous practices, visible in regional festivals, music performances, and traditional cooking methods across the municipalities. This mix shapes the everyday character and identity of the communities.
Major highways connect the eight municipalities, making travel by car or bus possible throughout the region. The best times to visit are during the dry months when roads are in good condition.
The region continues to produce substantial agricultural output that supplies markets across Brazil. Much of this production happens through a mix of family farms and larger commercial operations working side by side.
