Pico das Almas

Pico das Almas is a mountain summit with steep cliffs and extensive rock formations that rises above the surrounding landscape. The slopes show changing vegetation patterns that shift with elevation, creating distinct zones across its terrain.

The mountain served as a natural boundary between Rio de Contas and Livramento de Nossa Senhora since colonial times. This role as a border marker has remained unchanged for centuries.

Local communities have long gathered medicinal plants on the lower slopes, a practice passed down through families. You can still see these traditional paths and harvesting areas when walking through the surrounding landscape.

The hiking route around the summit takes a full day and includes rest stops at viewpoints along the way. Proper footwear and plenty of water are essential for the climb.

The summit hosts more than 1,200 documented plant species, making it one of the most botanically rich mountain regions in northeastern Brazil. This diversity draws botanists and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
