Festa da Boa Morte, Religious festival in Cachoeira, Brazil

The Festa da Boa Morte is a multi-day religious celebration in Cachoeira that blends Catholic traditions with African spiritual elements. The event features processions through the old town, banquets with traditional food, and dances that reflect a long local history.

The festival began in the 19th century as a blend of Portuguese Catholic veneration of the Assumption of Mary with practices that enslaved Africans brought to Brazil. Over time it became a symbol of resistance and identity for the black community in the region.

The celebration is organized by a sisterhood of elderly black women whose roots trace back to African traditions brought to Brazil centuries ago. Their processions and shared meals demonstrate how this group maintains and passes down their way of life to each new generation.

The festival takes place at a set time each year and draws visitors into the historic streets of Cachoeira. To make the most of the experience, visitors should prepare for long days and wear comfortable shoes since the processions and events involve considerable walking.

The Irmandade da Boa Morte, the sisterhood that leads the festival, has existed since the 18th century and was once a mutual aid organization for black women during colonial times. Today it remains one of Brazil's oldest continuously active black women's organizations.
