Igreja Senhor dos Passos, Catholic church in the center of Feira de Santana, Brazil
Igreja Senhor dos Passos is a church with neo-Gothic architecture located in downtown Feira de Santana. The exterior features walls covered with a special mortar mixture and large stained glass windows that display depictions of the twelve apostles.
Construction began in 1921 following the demolition of an original chapel from 1852, taking 58 years to complete due to financial and technical challenges. This extended construction period reflects the difficulties in rebuilding a religious site in the region.
The church serves as a center for regular religious ceremonies and hosts the traditional Festa de Santana, which brings together processions, masses, and community gatherings. These celebrations show how local people use the space as part of their spiritual and social life.
The church is located on Avenida Senhor dos Passos and reopened in 2012 after extensive renovations by the Bahia State Heritage Institute. Visitors can access it during regular service times and special events that are held throughout the year.
In May 2024 the church received the status of Archdiocesan Sanctuary, making it the first in the metropolitan region of Feira de Santana. This recent recognition highlights the growing spiritual importance of the site for the wider area.
