Poço de Petróleo de Candeias, Historic petroleum well in Candeias, Brazil

The Candeias Oil Well (C-1) is a historic well in the municipality of Candeias, Bahia, drilled in 1941. It was the first commercial oil well in Brazil, and its drilling rig was the same one used at Lobato in 1939. The well produced oil and gas until it was closed in March 1966. Petrobras later built a monument next to it to honor the first oil workers.

Drilling operations began in 1941 and led to the discovery of Brazil's first commercial oil field several months later. The find laid the foundation for the nation's oil industry and changed the country's economic direction.

The well's name entered local speech through the campaign "O Petróleo é Nosso", which pushed for a state monopoly and the creation of Petrobras. President Getúlio Vargas came to Candeias on 23 June 1952 and gave his official speech defending the monopoly in the oil zone itself, returning on 3 October 1953.

The site sits in the urban area of Candeias and is accessible on foot, especially from the city center. A monument and information plaques help visitors understand the significance of the location.

The C-1 produced oil and gas until March 1966, when it was shut in. Petrobras erected a monument at the site for its silver jubilee, honoring the first oil workers. Its inscription reads: "Cadeias 1. Where the dream began to become reality."
