Teatro Deodoro, Historic theatre in central Maceió, Brazil

Teatro Deodoro is a theatre building with neoclassical architecture in central Maceió featuring a performance hall seating 690 people, an Italian-style stage, boxes for spectators, and an ornate bronze chandelier. Additional spaces in the entrance area accommodate exhibitions and special events.

The foundation stone was laid in 1905 under architect Luiz Lucariny's design, and the building opened on November 15, 1910. It quickly became an important cultural venue in the developing city.

The grand hall was originally designed as a public library before becoming the setting for official ceremonies and government gatherings. The refined decoration still reflects its role in the city's formal social life.

The building is easily accessible and centrally located, making it straightforward to visit. Check ahead for event schedules as programming varies throughout the year.

From 1914 to 1933, the building briefly operated as a cinema, sparking protests from intellectuals who pushed for its return to theatrical performances. This period revealed how much the local cultural community valued preserving the space for live theatre.
