Paris n'América Store, Historic site and department store in Campina, Belém, Brazil.
Paris n'América Store is a three-floor Art Nouveau building with intricate wrought iron details, a cylindrical tower topped with a German clock, and a monumental staircase made in Scotland. The interior features female statues holding chandeliers along the stairs, creating a dramatic focal point as visitors move through the space.
Built in 1909 during the Rubber Boom when Belem was a center of international trade and wealth, the store was founded by Francisco de Castro. He imported textiles, perfumes, and cosmetics from France to serve the growing demand of the city's affluent population.
This store was where wealthy residents of Belem gathered and shopped, especially in the upper levels reserved for high society. The mezzanine level with its dressing rooms became the center for fashion shows that shaped local trends and influenced how people in the city thought about clothing.
The building is open to visitors during business hours, allowing exploration of the original staircases and their decorative elements. Plan extra time to examine the various floors carefully, as ornamental details are abundant throughout the structure.
Every construction material was imported, including decorative tiles from Belgium and Portugal, mirrors, lighting fixtures, and slate roofing from France's Dijon region. This turned the building into a showcase of European craftsmanship and luxury in the Amazon city of the time.
