Campos Sales, human settlement in Ceará, Brazil
Campos Sales is a small municipality in the state of Ceará, Brazil, located at an elevation of about 567 meters (1,860 feet) and covering more than 1,000 square kilometers. The town grew around a historic farm called Várzea das Vacas and is characterized by open fields, gentle hills, and simple buildings throughout its layout.
The town was founded at the end of the 19th century, initially as a trading post around the farm Várzea das Vacas. It received its current name in 1933 in honor of Manoel Ferraz de Campos Sales, a former Brazilian president.
The name Campos Sales honors a former Brazilian president and reflects the community's connection to its past. Residents know each other, gather in central squares, and maintain traditions like Festa Junina and religious celebrations where music, dance, and local food shape daily identity.
The nearest larger city is Araripina, about 57 kilometers away, where bigger airports and services can be found. Most visitors travel by private car, as public transportation is limited and roads are mainly rural.
In 1991 a meteorite fell near the town, marking a significant event for scientists studying space rocks. A small portion of this space stone is now preserved in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro as a reminder of this rare natural occurrence.
