José de Freitas

José de Freitas is a municipality in the Grande Teresina region in northeastern Piauí, situated in a hilly landscape. The town spreads across several neighborhoods and rural areas with the typical terrain found throughout the state.

The municipality emerged in the 19th century as part of Piauí's territorial development and played a role in settling the northeast region. Its creation was closely tied to regional expansion efforts.

The Zé Pereira celebration before Carnival brings together people wearing masks and costumes who dance through town, with visitors coming from surrounding communities. This tradition shapes the social rhythm before the larger Carnival season arrives.

Visitors can reach Barragem do Bezerro, where fishing and water activities take place in a relaxed setting. The location offers outdoor spaces good for spending leisure time.

Morro do Fidié holds a memorial dedicated to Major Fidié and the Battle of Jenipapo, a significant military engagement from local history. From this hillside, you can see across the surrounding hills that frame the town.
