Calcanhar Lighthouse, Maritime navigation beacon in Touros, Brazil.
Calcanhar Lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower that rises 62 meters (203 feet) above the coastline, strengthened by four vertical ribs running up its sides. The structure tapers as it ascends toward the lantern chamber at its top.
The current tower was completed in 1943 and replaced earlier structures from 1912 and 1937 at this strategically important coastal point. The successive reconstructions reflect the site's importance for maritime navigation.
The lighthouse marks the location known as "Esquina do Brasil", where the Brazilian coastline forms a distinctive right angle.
Visitors must climb 277 steps of a spiral staircase to reach the observation platform, then an additional 21 steps to access the lantern area. The ascent is physically demanding and takes place within a narrow, enclosed space.
The white light from this tower, the tallest lighthouse in Brazil, projects across the ocean for about 38 nautical miles. This beam serves to warn ships away from coral reefs positioned roughly 7 kilometers offshore.
