Reiterdenkmal, Windhoek, Colonial monument in Windhoek, Namibia
The Reiterdenkmal is a bronze equestrian statue depicting a mounted soldier holding reins and a rifle, positioned on a granite pedestal in Windhoek. The sculpture was carefully catalogued before being stored out of public view at the Alte Feste courtyard.
The monument was inaugurated in 1912 to commemorate German soldiers and civilians who died during colonial conflicts in the region. It originates from the period when Germany controlled South West Africa as a colonial territory.
The statue represented German colonial power in South West Africa and generated discussions about historical memory and national identity in independent Namibia.
The statue is no longer at its original location and is not accessible to the public. Visitors can visit the place where it originally stood, but the sculpture itself cannot be viewed.
The monument underwent multiple relocations throughout Windhoek's history, with its final removal requiring extensive security measures due to public concerns. Its shifting locations across the city reflect changing perspectives on the colonial period.
