Daan Viljoen Game Reserve, Nature reserve in Khomas Region, Namibia.
Daan Viljoen Game Reserve is a protected nature area near Windhoek spread across rolling hills with marked walking trails, camping zones, and day-use facilities for visitors. The reserve provides accommodation options, picnic areas, and basic services arranged throughout its landscape.
The reserve was established in 1968 to protect the landscape and wildlife of the region. It was named after Daniel Thomas du Plessis Viljoen, a government administrator who served in the territory during the mid-20th century.
The earthen-brick lodges throughout the reserve showcase traditional building methods, with open verandas and natural materials that reflect how people have lived in this landscape for generations.
Visit early in the morning or late afternoon when wildlife is most active and temperatures are cooler. Bring plenty of water and sturdy footwear, as trails cross uneven terrain and can involve uphill sections.
The reserve shelters over 200 bird species, including several found mainly in this region, alongside around 30 mammal types that range from small antelope to larger grazing animals. This mix of life makes it stand out as a focused wildlife destination close to Windhoek.
