Drakenstein Lion Park, Lion sanctuary in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Drakenstein Lion Park is a sanctuary for rescued lions located in the Stellenbosch area of the Cape Winelands. The site features spacious enclosures where lions from around the world live together in a setting that emphasizes their natural behaviors and well-being.
The park was established in 1998 as the first permanent rescue facility in the Western Cape region for lions taken from circus abuse and illegal trade. It grew from a mission to provide sanctuary for animals that had suffered in captivity elsewhere.
The sanctuary refuses to participate in cub petting, commercial breeding, or separating young animals from their mothers. You can see this ethical approach reflected in how the lions live and interact together in the park.
The grounds are walkable with paths leading to different enclosures, so bring comfortable shoes for exploring the area. Pack water and sun protection since much of the experience involves being outside in an open landscape.
You can spend the night in safari tents set up near the lion enclosures and fall asleep to the night sounds of these large cats. This overnight experience lets you encounter the lions during their most active hours after dark.
