Bellville’s Historical Clay and Stone Quarry and the Adjacent Jail

The museum exhibits tools, machinery, and artifacts from the former clay and stone quarry that operated from 1930 to 1973 in Bellville.

The adjacent jail, constructed in 1936, housed approximately 600 miners who worked in the quarry until its closure in the early 1970s.

This museum preserves the industrial legacy of Bellville through exhibitions that document the mining techniques and working conditions of the twentieth century.

The museum site spans across 260 hectares of the former quarrying grounds, featuring preserved sections of the original mining operations and jail structures.

A railway line connected the quarry directly to Bellville station, enabling the transportation of stones and clay products throughout the region.
