Knersvlakte Nature Reserve
Knersvlakte Nature Reserve is a large protected area in South Africa's Western Cape province, known for its stony landscape and dry conditions. The terrain is mostly flat with rocky ground, scattered shrubs, and low-lying plants adapted to survive in this arid climate.
The reserve was officially established in September 2014 to protect the landscape and its plants. The region had been managed by local communities for generations until formal protection status was granted to safeguard its unique species.
The name Knersvlakte means stony plain in the local language and reflects the rocky, rough terrain that shapes life here. People in nearby communities view this protected area as an important part of their natural heritage and connection to the land.
Visit during daylight hours when the sun is shining, as the landscape is brightest and most alive. Bring sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, and a camera to fully explore the unusual terrain and capture its natural beauty.
The reserve holds around 1500 plant species, with nearly 190 found nowhere else on Earth. About 155 of these species are at risk of disappearing without ongoing protection efforts.
